Shojumaru was created and designed by Brian J. Bonislawsky. He was born in 1973 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Bonislawsky attended the New World School of Arts and the Rhode Island School of Design. After School Bonislawsky founded the Astigmatic One Eye Typographic Institute. He received inspiration to create Shojumaru from a movie poster. The film was created in 1957 and was titled Sayonara, starring Marlon Brando. Bonislawsky played with the idea that breaks the formula of a chop suey style by mixing chop suey and traditional letterforms to create a powerful and unique letterforms all its own.
